SafeContractor Cost: What You Actually Pay
Quick answer: SafeContractor publishes four contractor plans with starting prices of £419 a year (Standard), £499 (Assisted), £499 (Express) and £549 (Premier) — verified October 2026. SafeContractor does not state whether those figures include VAT, so confirm it when you request your quote. Those are entry figures for smaller businesses only. Your actual annual subscription is calculated from your employee headcount, so a larger business pays more, and a one-off joining fee applies on top in year one. Certification lasts 12 months and has to be renewed annually.
The gap between the advertised "from" price and the invoice is where most contractors get caught out. This guide explains what SafeContractor actually charges for, what pushes your quote above the headline, and the two situations where you can legitimately pay less.
Disclaimer: Prices below are taken from SafeContractor's own published contractor pricing plans and verified October 2026. Fees change and are calculated per organisation — always confirm your own quote with the scheme before budgeting. The Published Plans
SafeContractor lists four contractor certification plans. The differences are in how much help you get and how quickly your assessment is reviewed, not in the certificate you end up with.
| Plan | Starting price (verified Oct 2026) | SafeContractor's own description | Support included | Contact within | Assessment review within |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Standard | From £419 per year | "You've got everything ready." | Induction to the assessment | 7 working days | 20 working days |
| Assisted | From £499 per year | "New to health and safety paperwork." | A dedicated application assistant | 5 working days | 5 working days |
| Express | From £499 per year | "For speedy certification." | Induction to the assessment | 2 working days | 2 working days |
| Premier | From £549 per year | "Fast certification with expert support." | A dedicated application assistant | 1 working day | 2 working days |
SafeContractor does not say on its pricing page whether these figures include or exclude VAT — ask when you request a quote, because on a £419 starting price the difference is around £84. Organisations with 1,500 or more employees are directed to call for pricing rather than use the published bands.
Why Your Quote Will Be Higher
SafeContractor is explicit about this on its own pricing page: "Prices shown are starting from prices for smaller businesses. Your annual subscription is calculated based on the number of employees in your organisation, so your final price may be higher than the amount shown. A one-off joining fee will also apply."
Two things follow from that sentence, and both matter for budgeting.
Headcount drives the subscription. The £419 entry point is for the smallest businesses. A contractor with thirty operatives is not paying the same as a sole trader. When you request a quote, have your actual employee number ready — including anyone the scheme would count that you might not think of.
Year one costs more than year two. The joining fee is separate from the subscription and applies only when you first register. Budget for it as a one-off, then expect the recurring cost to drop in year two if your headcount is stable. Contractors who budget the "from" price and nothing else are the ones who get a surprise.
Our accreditation cost calculator lets you model the first-year and renewal picture side by side, and our accreditation costs guide sets SafeContractor against the other schemes on price. For the application itself, see our guide to getting SafeContractor accreditation.
What the Fee Buys You
The certificate is a health and safety assessment against the SSIP core criteria, valid for 12 months. SafeContractor is a member of the SSIP Forum, and it states that "SafeContractor certification is recognised by clients and other SSIP schemes. For contractors, there's no need to complete multiple pre-qualification assessments."
That recognition is the part of the fee that is easy to undervalue. It means one assessment can satisfy multiple clients rather than one — which changes the arithmetic considerably if you work for several main contractors who each have their own preferred scheme.
The scheme also states that "more than 450 major client organisations only use contractors and suppliers that have the SafeContractor SSIP." If one of your clients is among them, the fee is not really discretionary.
Two Ways to Pay Less
Use deem to satisfy if you already hold SSIP. SafeContractor notes that "when your business is registered with SSIP, you're eligible for 'deem to satisfy' registration with many other pre-qualification portals." The reverse applies too — if you already hold a valid SSIP certificate from another member scheme, you should not be paying for a full second assessment to get recognition. Our guide to SSIP mutual recognition explains how this works in practice and where its limits are.
Buy the plan that matches your competence, not your nerves. The gap between Standard and Premier is £130 a year at the published starting prices (£419 against £549), and what it buys is a dedicated application assistant and a faster turnaround — contact within 1 working day and assessment review within 2, against 7 and 20 on Standard. If your health and safety documentation is already in order — a current health and safety policy, activity-specific risk assessments, and RAMS for your high-risk work — the Standard plan is likely enough. If your paperwork is scattered and you have a tender deadline, the assisted plans earn their money.
The honest test is whether you know where your documents are. Our readiness scorer will tell you in a few minutes whether you are in self-service territory or not.
Is SafeContractor the Cheapest Route?
Often not, and that is worth saying plainly. If your client has asked only for "SSIP" without naming a scheme, cheaper SSIP member schemes exist — our guide to budget SSIP routes compares them.
SafeContractor earns its price when a client names it, when you need the breadth of its client recognition, or when you want the assisted route through an assessment you would otherwise fail. It is poor value if you bought it because it was the first scheme you heard of.
Before you commit, check what the contract actually says. Our decision guide and scheme selector work through which scheme your specific client base requires.
Budgeting Checklist
- Get a quote using your real headcount, not the published entry price
- Add the one-off joining fee for year one
- Confirm the VAT treatment — SafeContractor does not publish it, so ask whether your quote is inclusive or exclusive
- Check whether an existing SSIP certificate makes you eligible for deem to satisfy
- Diarise the renewal 12 months out, so certification does not lapse mid-tender
