Constructionline Membership Levels Explained

By Brian Crocker· Last reviewed: 12 October 2026

Quick answer: Constructionline runs five subcontractor membership levels — Associate, Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum. Bronze covers insurance and SSIP data through a simplified question set. Silver adds sharing your compliance data with major construction and FM buyers. Gold adds the Common Assessment Standard. Platinum adds a one-day premises audit on top of Gold. Associate is free — Constructionline publishes the price and it is "no cost for the membership". The paid levels are priced by turnover band: you pick your band and SSIP status in the calculator on Constructionline's own site to get the price. At the lowest band (turnover up to £74,999) Bronze is £399, Silver £649, Gold £749 and Platinum £3,199 a year, plus a £99 joining fee and VAT (verified October 2026).

Most guides to Constructionline describe four levels. That is out of date — there is an Associate tier below Bronze, and missing it is the sort of detail that costs you a phone call when a client asks what you actually hold. This guide sets out what each level covers, which one your client is most likely asking for, and how to avoid paying for a tier you do not need.

Disclaimer: Level names, descriptions and prices below are taken from Constructionline's own published subcontractor membership pages and verified October 2026. Constructionline's paid levels have no single flat fee — its price calculator gives the price for your turnover band and SSIP status. The Associate level is the exception: Constructionline publishes its price, and it is nil. Always confirm the current level and price directly with the scheme before applying. The Five Levels, Lowest to Highest

Each level builds on the one below it. You are not choosing between separate products so much as choosing how far up the stack you need to go.

Associate

The entry tier, sitting below Bronze — and it is free. Constructionline's Associate page publishes the price under the heading "Membership level price": "Our Associate level acts as a 'try before you buy' and there is no cost for the membership. Once you're a member you can simply upgrade your account to take full advantage of a Constructionline membership." There is nothing to quote for, so do not let anyone sell you a quote for it.

Constructionline sets out what you get: "Associate membership is the entry point to our services. It offers members access to the Constructionline platform and the ability to store responses to core pre-qualification modules. Associate level will enable DPS registration, eliminating the need to reregister every time that you want to be considered for a contract."

What Associate does not carry is verification. Constructionline's own plan comparison shows Associate with none of the verification modules the paid levels hold — no health and safety, no insurances, no financials, no identity check and no "Verified Membership" tick — and its upgrade prompt is explicit about where that line falls: "Step up to one of our verified membership levels, Bronze, Silver, Gold or Platinum, to pre-qualify and promote your business to the largest network of public and private sector construction clients in the UK."

So if a client has said "be on Constructionline" and named no level, Associate is a free way to open the account, store your answers and register for a DPS — but it will not pre-qualify you, and it is almost certainly not what the buyer meant. Ask which level satisfies them before you pay for anything.

Bronze

Constructionline describes Bronze as letting you "manage your insurance and SSIP data through a simplified question set." This is the first tier that does anything with your compliance documents. It is a data-management level: your insurance details and your existing SSIP certificate live in one place where buyers can see them.

Bronze is also where SSIP enters the picture, and this is worth being precise about because it is widely misreported. Constructionline states that "Constructionline memberships include an SSIP from Once For All Health & Safety as standard", and its own FAQ confirms that "SSIP is now included across our Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum memberships." Bronze does not merely hold an SSIP certificate you obtained elsewhere — an SSIP is included with the membership.

If you already hold an SSIP certificate from another scheme, the same FAQ says you "will be able to show this with 'Deemed to Satisfy'". If you do not hold one, Constructionline says it "can offer this to you with our Once For All Health & Safety". Either way, do not buy a separate SSIP assessment alongside a Constructionline membership without first checking what the membership already includes — that is the expensive misunderstanding.

Silver

Silver lets you "share your compliance and SSIP data with the largest construction and FM buyers." The step up from Bronze is reach rather than depth — the same core data, exposed to the buyers who actively search the database when building tender lists.

Silver is where a lot of smaller subcontractors settle, and for good reason: if your work comes through regional main contractors rather than central government frameworks, Silver often does everything you need.

Gold

Gold is "all the benefits of Silver membership and also meet the Common Assessment Standard." This is the meaningful jump. The Common Assessment Standard is a much broader assessment than core health and safety — it covers corporate standing, financial position, environmental management, quality, equalities and modern slavery alongside H&S.

Gold is the level most Tier 1 contractors and public sector buyers have in mind when they say "Constructionline". Our Constructionline Gold guide covers the requirements and application process in detail.

Platinum

Platinum is "all the benefits of Gold Membership plus a one day premises audit." Someone visits your premises and verifies in person what Gold assessed on paper. It is aimed at contractors bidding for work where the client wants site-verified assurance rather than a desktop review.

For most SMEs, Platinum is more than the contract requires. It is worth the cost only when a specific client has asked for it.

What Each Level Covers

Level What it adds Assessed against CAS? Typical trigger
Associate Free. Platform access, storage for core pre-qualification responses, DPS registration — no verification modules No "Get on Constructionline" with no further detail — but it does not pre-qualify you
Bronze Manage insurance and SSIP data, simplified question set No Client wants your documents in one place
Silver Share compliance and SSIP data with major construction and FM buyers No Regional main contractors building tender lists
Gold Everything in Silver plus Common Assessment Standard Yes (desktop) Tier 1 supply chains, public sector work
Platinum Everything in Gold plus a one-day premises audit Yes (plus site audit) Client requires on-site verification

How the Paid Levels Are Priced

Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum have no single flat fee. Constructionline's subcontractor membership page uses a price selector: you select your turnover band and your SSIP status, and it returns a price excluding VAT ("*Prices do not include VAT"). At the lowest band (turnover up to £74,999) it shows Bronze £399, Silver £649, Gold £749 and Platinum £3,199 a year — each £50 less if you already hold a valid SSIP — plus a £99 one-off joining fee; at £50 million and above Gold is £8,099 with a £499 joining fee (verified October 2026). New members also pay a one-off joining fee in the first year: Constructionline's membership payments page states that "when you sign up for the first time, we will send you an invoice that includes your joining fee, along with your first year's membership."

This matters because a single annual figure quoted elsewhere applies to one turnover band at one point in time. At the same level and SSIP status, each turnover band has its own price, so a single figure only fits one band.

The practical approach: get your own quote from the price selector using your actual turnover, and budget for the joining fee on top in year one. Our accreditation cost calculator helps you compare the total picture across schemes, and our accreditation costs guide covers what drives price across the market.

Do You Already Hold SSIP Elsewhere?

If you already have an SSIP certificate from another scheme, say so when you get your quote. Constructionline's price selector asks about SSIP status specifically, because holding a valid certificate changes what it has to assess.

This is the same principle as SSIP mutual recognition working in your favour elsewhere in the market: an assessment you have already passed should not be paid for twice. Contractors who apply without mentioning an existing certificate sometimes pay for ground they have already covered.

Choosing Your Level

Work backwards from the requirement, not from the brochure:

  1. Read what the client actually asked for. "Constructionline registered" and "Constructionline Gold" are different requirements with different price tags. If the tender says only "Constructionline", ask which level satisfies them before you buy.
  2. Check whether they want the Common Assessment Standard. If yes, you need Gold as a minimum — Silver and below do not include it.
  3. Check whether a site audit was mentioned. Only Platinum includes one. If nobody asked for it, do not buy it.
  4. Check what you already hold. An existing SSIP certificate is worth declaring.
  5. Start lower if the requirement is vague. Moving up a level later is straightforward; a refund for a tier you did not need is not.

If you are weighing Constructionline against other schemes entirely, our scheme selector and our decision guide work through which accreditations your client base actually requires.

The Mistake Worth Avoiding

The most common error is buying Gold because it sounds like the safe choice, when the client would have accepted Silver — or paying separately for an SSIP assessment that a Constructionline membership already includes. Both come from treating the levels as a quality ladder rather than as different scopes of assessment.

They are scopes. Match the scope to the requirement in front of you, and the level chooses itself.
